Here you’ll find handy resources to help you in your umpiring journey. I’ve also listed the products I use, love and recommend, if you’re interested!
Umpiring resources:
Pre-match talk aid: (right-click, save/copy image, put into a Word document and print off)
Fitness/training workouts: Fitness Blender
Sports psychology: Believe Perform
FIH information for umpires, including fitness manual: FIH Umpires
International appointments and upgrades: FIH appointments
Rules books: FIH Rules of Hockey
Products I recommend:
Whistles
Fox40 are, hands down, the best. Don’t bother with anything else. I use the Fox40 Mini with the Cushioned Mouth Grip (CMG).
Suggestions of where to buy:
Aus Ref have a great selection – they’re a great option if you are located in Australia. Their international shipping is a little slow, so if you’re outside of Australia I’d recommend…
Sports Resources Ltd also have a great range of Fox40s in pretty colours 🙂 They ship world-wide. Team up with your friends to split the shipping costs.
Referee Store have a good collection too.
Umpiring equipment
Sports Resources Ltd have a great range of umpiring gear like cards, lanyards, whistles, etc. They ship world-wide. Team up with your friends to split the shipping costs.
Aus Ref have a great selection – they’re a great option if you are located in Australia.
Equipment organiser – Referee World and Aus Ref.
Referee Store also have some cool bags to organise your kit.
Shoes
Personally, I haven’t found better runners than Asics Kayano.
Socks
ThinSkins are THE. BEST. for all sports socks (I’m not JUST talking about knee-high socks for the ladies!). They never fall down, are super comfy, contain compression technology and don’t have any visible logos. And they ship world-wide! You can also buy different colours if you play and need some training socks too.
Sports bras
You can’t go past Berlei (for the UK/EU site see here). They’re the only bra manufacturer to officially partner with the Australian Institute of Sport, and have Serena Williams as their ambassador. If leading science AND a recommendation from one of the greatest sportswomen of our time doesn’t convince you, I don’t know what will.
Watches
Garmin produce the best GPS watches on the market. They have a whole range, from affordable to super fancy. They’re great for keeping track of your stats on the pitch (and the time of course!), but they’re also a handy companion to have when training. They not only track your distance and heart rate, but depending on the watch, they can also keep tabs on your interval and recovery times, reps, sets and a whole bunch more…
Radios
AXIWI are the best quality radios I’ve used, but they are a little pricey. They’re likely not affordable for a personal purchase, but if your association is going to buy a set, or you can get a group together to split the costs, these are the ones to get!
